FIVE (5) Important Points About Pastoral Involvement in Politics

It’s the election season and people are passionate. Any person slightly involved in social media has seen the flurry and firestorm of opinions with regards to candidates, platforms, nominations, and the general election. It is as passionate and crazy as I have ever seen in my lifetime.

One of the common themes or comments I see repeatedly is the cry for more pastors to be involved in the political process. It stretches from simple wishful thinking to an all out assault on pastoral integrity. Believe me, I get the frustrations and the dynamics of pastoral involvement better than most. I am not only a pastor who is deeply involved in cultural engagement and the political process, but I believe a part of my calling is to help fellow pastors cross the bridge to more meaningful involvement. I understand what it is like to lead people in a real live congregation in these matters as well as reach out to pastors and understand their reluctance to open up this can. I have on more occasions than I can count challenged my colleagues to get on the field and use their influence in this arena for “righteousness exalts a nation”. I have also tried to lead people in executing a better and more biblical template with regards to how we select our civil leaders and turn a nation’s trajectory back to God.

How Shall We Disciple Donald Trump?

How Shall We Disciple Donald Trump?

I want to take just a moment and thank the 200+ Facebook friends who tagged or messaged me with the article quoting the esteemed Dr. James Dobson with regards to the recent commitment Donald Trump made to Jesus Christ. I mean that genuinely and it is heartfelt (you can stop the tagging now). Despite not personally endorsing or supporting Donald Trump, I do want the man and his family to know Jesus Christ, be prepared for heaven, and be genuinely converted in his life and thought. It does him and us no service to simply be culturally assimilated into the ranks of the “tares” of the American Church. I will also say that through the primary process of getting to “know” Donald Trump there have been at least 3 separate and recent accounts to this Christian commitment and it would be nice to hear the actual testimony and/or journey from the candidate himself. Perhaps that will soon be clarified.

A Job Description for Donald Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Board

Reminiscent of the 1980 remarks of Ronald Reagan to a group of evangelical pastors and leaders gathered at Reunion Arena in Dallas, Donald Trump has formed an evangelical “advisory board” which, according to his website, “represents Donald J. Trump’s endorsement of those diverse issues important to Evangelicals and other Christians, and his desire to have access to the wise counsel of such leaders as needed.” None of these leaders were required to endorse his candidacy although several of them unmistakably have already done that. The list of these leaders is as follows:

How Can This Many People Be Wrong?

image  The now infamous Jerry Falwell Jr. picture with DT.

Every parent has heard (and I suspect many of them said as a child), “Hey Dad (or Mom), everyone is doing this and if everyone is doing this, how can it be wrong?”

And the classic response from the parent has been, “If everyone was jumping off a cliff would you do that too?”

Responses to Criticisms of the “No Lesser of Two Evil Movement”

If you have followed social media then you have likely ran across a growing number of Christians who have decided that voting for the lessor of two evils is no longer a viable strategy for national reformation. This blog is not intended to articulate the philosophy of the movement except to say that the foundation is formed in a couple of simple points: (These are not exhaustive)

1. Whatever you do (that includes voting) you do to the glory of God. (I Cor. 10:31, Col. 3:17)

2. There is a biblical qualifying standard and process for civic leaders to embrace. (Ex. 18:13-24; Romans 13:1-6; I Timothy 3, Titus 1)

3. We are to agree not only with the GOALS of reformation, but obey the Scriptural pattern and process for electing those leaders stewarding our nation.

4. Empowering unrighteousness will never produce a righteous outcome.
