Pandemic Perspective Post #1

“And we know that God CAUSES all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NASB)

Everything begins with a thought (Proverbs 23:7). You will not navigate this pandemic crisis unless you seize your thought life. When Timothy said that we were not to succumb to the spirit of fear, he contrasted in part with having a “sound” or healthy mind (2 Timothy 1:7). You will not navigate this current crisis successfully as a Christian unless you understand that there is a war raging for your mind at this very moment. Whoever (or whatever) wins that battlefield, will ultimately determine the quality of your life. In order to primarily help myself, I am going to post some Pandemic Perspective moments to help renew my mind. You are welcome to check in and to whatever extent it helps you…well…to God be the glory.

Immigration or Invasion? (A biblical analysis of our crisis)

There is a part of me that dreads and has avoided writing an opinion blog on immigration. As it stands currently, it is a convoluted and twisted mess of a crisis that has become politicized within American culture and polarizing within the ranks of Christendom. No one argues the fact that our southern borders are being pressured in significant ways by untold thousands (and millions) of people seeking entrance into the United States. The pressure by these migrating aliens has revealed in several ways the weaknesses of our national policies regarding the entrance to our nation by the foreigner. This is not a new problem in American history, but there is no doubt that currently it is a focal point of national debate and discussion.

Trump: Constantine or Cyrus?

This blog has been stirring and twirling around inside of me since the 2016 presidential election. I realize that any stipulations or caveats to introduce what I am about to say will never appease either side of the Trump phenomena. Our President has this ability (along with his adversaries) to push people into two camps. You are either “for him” or “against him” and there is little to no gray zone to simply make observations and factual evaluations. The “always-Trump” sycophants who support the President no matter what he does will probably take this article as an attack on the man whom God has anointed; while those “never-Trump” critics will say it has not gone far enough and compromises Biblical Christianity. I guess I will navigate the middle way which will probably get me hit from both sides, but I think the analogy which I want to share has a timeliness which needs to be released as we enter the 2020 election cycle.

What Do I Say After 22 years in Charleston, SC?

“Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”” Luke 19:41-44

There are three cities in the earth who carry the moniker, whether it be official or simply colloquial, “The Holy City”; Jerusalem, The Vatican, and Charleston, South Carolina. The first two are probably no surprise and perhaps even understandable given their role in the arena of religion. The last one has always seemed a tad presumptuous to me, especially after living here for 22 years and not only understanding her history but experiencing her contemporary spiritual state.

The IRS is in the Church Parking Lot (Literally)

I was recently made aware of a Politico article exposing a little known tax scheme aimed at non-profits (including churches, synagogues, colleges and hospitals) that your government has devised to regulate your parking lot.

Yes, you read that correctly…

The United States Government wants to regulate and tax the parking lots of American non-profit organizations. It’s insatiable desire to tax is again aimed at local churches.
