A Letter to a Senator from a Simpleton

image “An Odious and Limited View of the World”

“I am personally sick and tired of the narrow-minded, hateful groups we continuously hear from who use Christianity to support their simplistic and intolerant view of the world.”
~ Indiana State Senate Majority Leader (GOP) David Long referencing Bible-believing, Liberty loving, Conservative Christian people in Indiana.

Senator David Long must be under a lot of pressure. I have no idea what universe he is currently living in, but those remarks found in the opinion section of the Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel would be offensive to your political adversaries much less your base.

To see the full text of his remarks you may link at the following:

Senator Long is upset for various reasons…

– He did not get his way this legislative session in passing the various SOGI (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) Bills.
– He was embarrassed as the Senate Majority leader that his own caucus shut the door on this misguided effort.
– He was left isolated in this pursuit by both the Governor and the House Speaker who wanted nothing to do with this legislation.
– He made promises to big businesses and homosexual activists which he was unable to keep.
– He has a solid primary candidate who may (and should) unseat him because of this betrayal.
– And finally, his Christianity and character have come into question as his methods, integrity, and true faith commitment have been exposed in his support of the radical homosexual agenda.

Yes, there are a few reasons Senator Long may not be responding optimally in these days.

It needs to be said that no one in the conservative Christian community was looking for a fight. We were minding our own business, raising our own families, paying our taxes, running our businesses, striving to be law-abiding, profitable, model Hoosiers. We were simply living lives that were trying to honor God in everything we put our hand to. All of a sudden, we were told that we were homophobic, bigoted, and intolerant because there were events we felt uncomfortable facilitating and we were concerned about letting men in women’s bathrooms. The largest newspaper in the state repeatedly beat that drum along with other media outlets and quickly we were labeled the villains. So these normally quiet Christians got involved in the “process”. Pastors began to mobilize and engage. It took legislators like Senator Long by surprise because historically we had been politically naive and trusting. We had traditionally believed what these politicians told us when they came to our churches and claimed they were “one of us”. However now, we were slowly awakening to the fact that what they claimed in our churches and on the campaign trail wasn’t always followed through in the halls of the Statehouse.

And Senator Long became the poster child for that hypocrisy.

It was Senator Long, and some of his colleagues, who began to directly attack our sincerity and faith. They started with words like “extremists”, “fringe”, and “radical”, but now have increased the epithets as illustrated in the quote above. As you may notice in the article linked, Senator Long addresses one Christian who would dare to try unseat him by declaring that his views are “an odious and limited view of the world.” Yes, this is the public official who says he is “one of us”. This is the GOP Senate majority leader who tried to pull the religious liberty rug out from beneath our feet. This is one who said he will be back pushing again for special rights for the confused and restrictions of religious freedom because it is “inevitable”.

Make sure you read that carefully…

Sen Long says that it is inevitable that…

– You will be fined for honoring God in your business.
– You will be targeted for lawsuits by radical homosexual groups.
– Your daughters will be going to the bathroom with confused men.
– As a Christian your faith will be vilified, marginalized, and stigmatized in your state.

And Senator Long has the audacity to feign offense towards us.

Let me be clear…

Bible-believing Christians are sick and tired of patronizing politicians who continually want us to support their anti-Christian bigotry under the banner of “tolerance”. We too are fed up with our supposed friends in the GOP throwing our concerns to the curb while you worship the economic engines of big business. We are seeing through your stump speeches and watching the fruit on your tree. You can throw your epithets at us Senator Long, but they no longer frighten us back behind the four walls of our churches. We see you for who you really are and that opinion piece epithet should be the epitaph that is on your political career.

So, as I conclude I say thank-you Senator Long. I thank-you for reinvigorating and igniting the Church to engage the moral decay our state is seeking to codify. I thank-you for mobilizing Christian business owners and service owners who wanted to live quiet lives but are now faced with either losing their businesses or the practice of their faith. I thank-you for awakening hundreds and thousands of pastors who are realizing that you are seeking to thwart what they are exhorting their people to do and that is take their faith to the marketplace. That single quote may be the catalyzing statement which causes the Church of Indiana to arise and recover the moral ground which has been lost to compromised politicians such as yourself.

And should you be retired from the Indiana Senate and forced to return to the private sector, my prayer is that you will be able to practice your faith, which you so energetically proclaim in the editorial, with the full freedom of conscience which you seem incredibly committed to steal from the rest of us.

Excellent article! Even those of us who claim no particular faith are offended by Long’s remark. While I cannot vote for him, I have contributed to his opponent and will again if I’m able. Hypocrites like Long are dangerous and need to be removed from any kind of power over fellow citizens. Please keep up the fight! I am rooting for you.

Thank you for so clearly responding with the Hoosier majority view. I hope my pastor will join your efforts to engage our culture and government more effectively. Are you available for pulpit supply? “May your tribe increase”!
