Sloppy Sovereignty

The GOP primary has revealed so many dynamics that psychologists, sociologists, and theologians will have plenty of fodder to complete a host of new Ph.D. dissertations in the near future. While I do not claim to be any of the above, I have been particularly interested in the theological acrobatics Christians have engaged in justifying a Trump candidacy and vote. Any one of a hundred reasons as to why Donald is God’s choice could warrant a college term paper in response, but I only want to briefly explore one that I have called, “Sloppy Sovereignty”.

The Scapegoating of Biblical Christianity

image

“The reason we’ve had Obama for 8 years is because our good brothers and sisters in Christ couldn’t vote for McCain and Romney so we got the left…
That means we got Obamacare, we got Benghazi, we got a strained military, and Supreme Court justices we totally disagree with.
And now we’re going to do it again and get more of the same….
How sad!”

~ A Facebook Post of a Christian blaming other Christians for the state of America

The concept of a scapegoat comes from the Bible. It is when a goat was sent into the wilderness after the Jewish chief priest had symbolically laid the sins of the people upon it (Lev. 16). The symbolism of this event was to illustrate to the people how they were no longer culpable for their sins. The goat now carried the weight of their sins. I do not wish to think too highly of myself, but I am one of those opponents who has been vocal in this debate and through the media. I am also a pastor who takes exception to my integrity being questioned no matter how veiled or unintended it may be. An accusation towards a person whose livelihood and credibility revolves around integrity deserves a response. So, I will start with this…

A Letter to a Senator from a Simpleton

image “An Odious and Limited View of the World”

“I am personally sick and tired of the narrow-minded, hateful groups we continuously hear from who use Christianity to support their simplistic and intolerant view of the world.”
~ Indiana State Senate Majority Leader (GOP) David Long referencing Bible-believing, Liberty loving, Conservative Christian people in Indiana.

Senator David Long must be under a lot of pressure. I have no idea what universe he is currently living in, but those remarks found in the opinion section of the Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel would be offensive to your political adversaries much less your base.
